Description

David K. Webb working with the pH meter. David was an expert on clay mineralogy. A pH meter measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Certain clays form in acid environments and others in alkaline environments. Also, when clays are subjected to acid solutions and certain other solutions, such as dissolved salt (NaCl), the clay minerals will attract each other and form large aggregates causing the clay minerals to flocculate, or clump together and settle to the bottom of the solution. David might have been working to determine the pH of his clay samples as well as other properties in order to eventually inform other investigators about the possible use of Ohio clays in various products. David worked in the Regional Geology Section of the Ohio Geological Survey and was also Assistant Chief of the division. This picture was taken in the geochemistry laboratory at the Grandview Avenue Offices. The image was taken in March 1967. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey's main office was located at 1207 Grandview Avenue, Grandview Heights, Ohio 43212 from 1962 through May 1973. The Geological Survey's offices were on part of the first floor and all of the second floor of the building. The Grandview office had x-ray, petrography, and geochemistry laboratories on the first floor. More informally, rooms with coal polishing equipment, microscopes, and other types of equipment were located in various spaces at the Grandview office. Information about the history of the Survey's facilities is available in Survey Opens New Core and Sample Repository by Merrianne Hackathorn (Ohio Geological Survey, Ohio Geology Newsletter, No. 4, 1999). This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
