Description

The image shows a close-up of a section of Ohio Division of Geological Survey's core DGS 3274 at the interval of 2843 to 2843.4 feet. This section is from the Black River Group and shows fault and slickenlines perpendicular to the core length. This core section comes from the central uplift of the Serpent Mound Impact Structure, which has dolomite, shale, limestone, sandstone, and siltstone lithologies. Because of the geologic forces that have acted on the site of the impact structure, bedrock in the area is a mixture of uplifted, down dropped, faulted, folded and eroded rock from the Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian and Mississippian Geologic Periods. In 1979, John L. Carroll Mineral Exploration of New York City drilled two core holes in the Serpent Mound Impact Structure in Bratton Township, Adams County, Ohio. The two core holes were donated to the Ohio Division of Geological Survey in 1993. Ohio Division of Geological Survey geologists examined the two John L. Carroll Minerals cores in detail in 1996. At that time, some core intervals were found to be missing (91 meters in DGS 3274). The first hole, identified as DGS 3274, was drilled within the central uplift to a depth of 903 meters penetrating fractured, faulted, brecciated, and undeformed to severely deformed Upper Cambrian to Upper Devonian limestone, shale, dolomite and sandstone. Bedding inclinations vary widely from overturned beds to beds dipping approximately 30 degrees or less. The drill core penetrated large blocks of sedimentary rocks, on the order of 50 meters or more thick with various breccia layers ranging from less than 1 centimeter to more than 80 meters in thickness. Specific details regarding faults, breccias, shatter cones, slickenlines, stylolites, mineralization, and other features can be found in the lithologic descriptions and graphic logs for cores in Subsurface Geology of the Serpent Mound Disturbance, Adams, Highland, and Pike Counties, Ohio by Mark T. Baranoski, Gregory A. Schumacher, Doyle R. Watts, Richard W. Carlton, and Belgasem M. El-Saiti (Report of Investigations No. 146) published by the Ohio Division of Geological Survey in 2003. This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
