Description

A view of the Ohio Geological Survey's core repository at 4140 Fisher Road, Columbus Ohio 43228. The core collection was located at this warehouse, known to the staff as the Phillipi Road Warehouse, between 1984 and the dedication of the Horace R. Collins Laboratory at 3307 South Old State Road, Delaware, Ohio 43015 in 1999. The Ohio Geological Survey's Longyear Hydro-44 drill core rig is shown in this image. The image was made by Michael C. Hansen in 1987. REVIEW For information about the Ohio Geological Survey's drill rigs, see: Survey Begins Coring Program with New Rig by Michael C. Hansen (Ohio Geological Survey, Ohio Geology Newsletter, Fall 1981) page 1. In May 1981 the Survey...received its...truck-mounted coring rig...a custom-built B-61 Pacemaker manufactured by Mobile Drilling Company, Inc., of Indianapolis, Indiana has a maximum coring depth of nearly 3,000 feet....Survey geologist David A. Hodges is in charge of the coring rig...Driller is Michael J. Mitchell and John L. Sullivan is assistant driller. In addition to this crew, assigned full-time to the rig, a project geologist is in charge of sitting holes and logging core for each particular study. AND Core Rig Update by Douglas L. Crowell (Ohio Geological Survey, Ohio Geology Newsletter, Fall 1985) page 7. ...Survey drillers Michael J. Mitchell and Roy T. Dawson. AND Horace R. Collins-10th State Geologist by Robert G. Van Horn (Ohio Geological Survey, Ohio Geology Newsletter, Summer 1988) page 2, column 2, paragraph 3: ...purchase the Survey's first core-drilling rig, a Mobile B-61 Pacemaker, in 1980. A drilling crew was assembled, and drilling began in May 1981. This program proved to be so successful that...two other drill rigs (were purchased) in 1986--a Longyear Hydro 44 which is capable of core drilling to a depth of almost 6,000 feet, and a CME auger rig which is capable of obtaining continuous, oriented core samples of unconsolidated sediment. In addition to the purchase of these other rigs, the Division's drilling program had gained sufficient appreciation from Ohio mineral industries that one company, France Stone Company, donated a fourth core-drilling rig to the Survey. The Ohio Geological Survey's core repository was located at 1500 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio 43215 until 1984. It moved to a building, known to the staff as the Phillipi Road Warehouse, at 4140 Fisher Road, Columbus Ohio 43228 between 1984 and the dedication of the Horace R. Collins Laboratory at 3307 South Old State Road, Delaware, Ohio 43015 in 1999. The Horace R. Collins Laboratory was dedicated on October 12, 1999, to provide citizens, industry personnel, and researchers with a climate-controlled environment for the study of the Ohio Geological Sample Repository contents. Information about the history of the Survey's facilities is available in Survey Opens New Core and Sample Repository by Merrianne Hackathorn (Ohio Geological Survey, Ohio Geology Newsletter, No. 4, 1999). This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
