Description

L.J. Hughes and Sons company drill rig at the site of Drill Hole #10 for coal exploration at the Deep Core II project in Seneca Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Michael L. Couchot and Gary Watts are in the background by the work van. The drill core is described in Ohio Geological Survey Core Record File No. 2410. The image was taken by Michael C. Hansen in November 1977. REVIEW Information comes from: Investigation of the Deep Coal Resources of Portions of Belmont, Guernsey, Monroe, Noble, and Washington Counties, Ohio (Ohio Geological Survey, Report of Investigations 116, 1980). The Deep Core project was funded in part by a grant (Contract No. 77-10) from the Ohio Department of Energy. Each core hole was projected to penetrate to the greatest depth at which coal could theoretically be found in Ohio (i.e. through the entire Pennsylvanian System). This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
