Description

The Brandywine Falls is a 65-foot waterfall near Sagamore Hills, Summit County, Ohio. The falls is in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Brandywine Creek flows over the hard layer of Berea Sandstone that caps the waterfall, protecting softer layers of rock below. The softer layers beneath include Bedford and Cleveland shales. The shale is thinly laminated, giving water a bridal veil appearance as it cascades down the falls. This area has shale, siltstone and sandstone lithologies. Bedrock is from the Devonian Geologic Period. The image was an entry in the 1985 Ohio Geology Slide Contest. This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
