The site of the Scioto Saline archaeological excavation in Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio. The excavation was at the location of a trash pit in Lot 10 of the city of Jackson. The general area, referred to as "the foot of Broadway," had references documented as early at 1798 as being a place of salt boiling activity on the north bank of Salt Lick Creek. The image was taken by Michael C. Hansen in June 1991.
In 1990, the City of Jackson, Ohio, began improvements in an area along the railroad and the Salt Creek valley. Deanna Figlestahler, Director of the Jackson Community Development Office, pursued an assessment of preservation and development in the area. James L. Murphy and James Morton volunteered to lead an archaeological investigation in the area of Boone Rock and Lot 10 in the city. Kevin Coleman's background was historic preservation and reenactment in the southeastern Ohio area. J. Michael Stroth was President of S.B.A. Consultants, Inc., a consulting engineering firm at Jackson, Ohio. Mr. Stroth did water salinity testing at the site and guided the city's heavy equipment used during the excavation at Lot 10.
