Description

Salt seep at the base of Boone Rock, a cliff of Sharon sandstone/gonglomerate adjacent to the Jackson municipal sewage-treatment plant in Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio. A meander of the Little Salt Creek formerly flowed at the base of the cliff but was abandoned when the stream was channelized. American Indians, and later settlers, made salt at this site by digging shallow pits into the sandstone exposed in the creek bed, then boiling the brine that seeped into these pits. The image was taken by Michael C. Hansen in June 1991. REVIEW For Information about Michael C. Hansen's research on Scioto Saline, see Accession #2016_007, Box 1157 and Accession # 2016_008, Box 1160 in the Ohio Geological Survey Archives Collection.
