Description

A ram car, or mine scoop, moving coal in a subsurface coal mine operated by the Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company in Barnesville, Ohio. The image was made by Michael C. Hansen in July, 1977. The location is approximate to the township. From Douglas Crowell in an e-mail to Lisa Long on July 18, 2016: A ram car, or mine scoop, is a battery- or diesel-powered haulage and utility vehicle used in underground mines to transport material, such as coal, from the working face to a conveyor or another mine car. Since the photo apparently was taken in 1977 from a Y&O coal mine, the closest Y&O underground mines to Barnesville that I could up with are the Nelms No. 1 (HN-55) and Nelms No. 2 (HN-75) mines. Both of these mines were in operation during 1977. The Puskarich Public Library in Cadiz, Ohio, has a Harrison County History of Coal Museum in its local history and genealogy section. Might try contacting them for more information about Y & O Coal Company (Wikipedia says Puskarich has a video produced by Y & O titled "Energy Under Ground" among its coal memorabilia). This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
