Description

An aerodyne fan at the Allison Mine operated by the Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company in Monroe County, Ohio. The fan functioned to blow fresh air through the mine. The image was made by Michael C. Hansen in July, 1977. The location is approximate to the township. REVIEW Allison mine was opened by the Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company (Y&O) in late 1967. It operated as a room and pillar mine until late 1979. It was closed in the mid-1980s. It was sold, reopened and renamed the Century Mine by American Energy Corporation in 2002. The mine operated in the Pittsburgh (No. 8) coal in Belmont and Monroe counties in Ohio. See Case Study 6: Century Mine by David L. Bartsch in Modern American Coal Mining: Methods and Applications edited by Christopher J. Bise. The Puskarich Public Library in Cadiz, Ohio, has a Harrison County History of Coal Museum in its local history and genealogy section. Might try contacting them for more information about Y & O Coal Company (Wikipedia says Puskarich has a video produced by Y & O titled "Energy Under Ground" among its coal memorabilia). This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
