Description

A flagstone fence made from Columbus Limestone in Erie County, Ohio. The image was taken by Merrianne Hackathorn in April 1983 during the Ohio Academy of Science "Cruising the Columbus Cuesta" field trip led by Jane L. Forsyth and Charles F. Kahle. REVIEW In and e-mail from Merrianne Hackathorn to Lisa Long on 20 August 2016: I believe both these photos, S21.03.002 and S23.02.028, were taken on the April 24, 1983, Ohio Academy of Science Cruising the Columbus Cuesta" field trip. The sinkhole photo (S21.03.002) is probably at Stop 3, which is located in the NE1/4 sec. 13, T4N R17E, York Twp., Sandusky County. The stone wall photo (S23.02.028) is probably in the vicinity of Stop 6, the old Wagner Quarry on SR 101 in Margaretta Twp., Erie County. I looked at the quarry on Google Maps and followed SR 101 for a ways and did not see anything that looked like a stone wall, but it may very well not be extant. In an e-mail from Ron Davidson, Special Collections Librarian Sandusky Public Library, to Lisa Long on 8 September 2016, Ron suggested a location for the fence at 41.407876 latitude and at -82.770726 longitude, which is on the northeast side of Castalia across from the active Erie Blacktop, Inc., stone quarry:" Hi, Lisa--it is hard to pin down the location because of the lack of landmarks. If I had to guess, however, I would say that it could be a long stone fence on Bardshar Road near the intersection of Route 101. The old quarry is across the street. Unfortunately, there is no street view for that location. There is a large farm pasture behind the fence, with farmhouses in the distance, so the scene fits. Unfortunately, there is nothing to prove it beyond a doubt, but I think the slide is likely from here. I hope this helps." This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
