Description

The Hewitt Monument was errected circa 1842 at the location of "Hermit's Cave" where William Hewitt, who was known as the "Scioto Hermit," lived from circa 1820 until his death in 1834. The monument's inscription reads, "Wm. Hewitt, the Hermit, occupied this cave 14 years, while all was a wilderness around him. He died in 1834, aged 70 years." The monument was moved circa 1952 to the location pictured here at the entrance to Scioto Trail State Forest and Park at the intersection of United States Highway 23 and State Route 372. The monument was moved again and now sits near Caldwell Lake inside the park's grounds. This photograph was taken by Michael C. Hansen in 1979. This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
