A rock showing the contact of the Maxville Limestone with the Harrison ore of the Pottsville Group at the Somerset Stone Company in Hopewell Township, Perry County, Ohio. The area of the quarry has shale, siltstone, sandstone conglomerate, and limestone lithologies. The Harrison ore is generally an impure iron ore formerly worked for iron smelting. It is bedded in the eroded surface of the Maxville Limestone and is of variable composition sometimes containing siliceous fragments and quartz pebbles cemented by iron compounds. Bedrock is from the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian Geologic Periods. The photograph was taken by Michael C. Hansen in 1984.
