Description

An outcrop of the Middle Kittanning (No. 6) coal of the Allegheny Group in Osnaburg Township, Stark County, Ohio. This area has shale, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate, limestone, coal, clay and flint lithologies. Bedrock is from the Pennsylvanian Geologic Period. The photograph was taken at the location of Measured Stratigraphic Section File Number 14944, measured by Richard M. DeLong and Joseph Granchi on September 22, 1959. The Middle Kittanning (No. 6) coal is generally described as weathered. The detailed measured section file information for the coal describes it as reworked, interbedded with shale, each 1/4 to 4 inches thick, laterally thinning to 1 inch of possible in situ coal. Bradley E. Smith is pictured in this image taken in 1961. This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
