An outcrop with honeycomb weathering in the Hockingport sandstone of the Dunkard Group along Ohio State Route 124, 1 mile northeast of Hockingport, Athens County, Ohio. This area has shale, siltstone, mudstone, sandstone, limestone and coal lithologies. Bedrock is from the Late Pennsylvanian, Early Permian Geologic Period. The photograph was taken by Michael C. Hansen in 1988. A NewsCenter article written by Todd Baucher and posted on November 16, 2009, describes the rerouting of Ohio State Route 124, which had previously followed the state line along the Ohio River. In 2009, the new Ohio State Route 124 opened routed along Athens County Road 62 (Youba Ridge Rd.) from Hockingport to a new eastern terminus near Torch. The former section from Hockingport to Little Hocking, Ohio, had been permanently closed in January 2005 due to a landslide caused by flooding after a barge became lodged in the Belleville Lock and Dam at Reedsville, Ohio. Spillway gates were inoperable due to the interference from the barges and loss of pool occurred. Water drained out of the dam and eroded the banks along the Ohio River according to David Rouse, spokesman for District 10 of the Ohio Department of Transportation and information taken from the United States Army Corps of Engineers Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory projects list.
