TG: 1997, "Joe and Ogus"

Description

The Gargoyle Press, precursor. "Joe and Ogus: The Story of my Father and my Stepmother", by Jennie Gray. This memoir was published in a private edition, being far too scandalous and libellous to disseminate at that time. Printed in December 1997, "Joe and Ogus" was an early precursor of The Gargoyle Press publications. It used the same methods which were later used by the Gargoyle Press: it was printed on an ordinary inkjet printer but using archive inks on specialist acid-free paper, and was then individually bound by hand by Alan Dollery, a bookbinder who ran Kingswood Books, Milbourne Port, Sherbourne, Dorset. "The Prayer of Richard III", made for the Gothic Society earlier in 1997, was the first one of this series of handmade books. June Struben-Clinton (who designed and illustrated "The Prayer") was very influential at the dawn of these projects. For more on June, see "The Prayer of Richard III" entry on this catalogue.
