Use

The lantern showed the train where to stop when pulling into the depot area at night so that the train would be lined up with the boarding platform for people to board/depart the train. They were also used when needed for additional light on work sites or for more light when driving supply Trucks late at night, they were very helpful during times of fog in and around the Depots, and the rail yards in general.
