Description

It is rectangular constructed of wood. Interior is lined and features a removable shelf with two compartments, one larger than the other. Domed, hinged lid with hinges held in place by brass escutcheons. Domed lid and upper third of sides front and back of the base of the trunk are covered with thin metallic sheets (copper or tin) held in place by tacks and wood slats. Top of lid has 3 evenly spaced arched slats, and there is one horizontal slat on the front and back. Metal sheet on top of the lid has an embossed foliate designs. End of the trunk had leather handles, one of which is broken and the other is frayed.

KESSELL FAMILY HEIRLOOM TRUNK used to store important papers and documents by John Walter Kessell and Mary Brooks Kessell. Passed to Samuel Dalton and Mary Irene Kessell. Passed to their daughter, Mary Sue Kessell Rosen. Estimated age of the trunk is 75 to 100 years.
