Condition

Notes

Overall, the painting is in fair condition. The cardboard support is degraded, brittle, and exhibits numerous areas of damage around its edges and the perimeter of the surface. There are two holes in the support with associated loss to the paint layer at the top, center (see right). There is a diagonal split in the lower right corner that is vulnerable to loss and visually distracting. The split is adjacent to a 1” x 1 ½” loss to the topmost painted surface. There is also an old crease with a raised edge in the lower left corner. The paint layer is generally in good condition apart from areas of horizontal cracking at the top center that appear to be slightly lifting from the cardboard surface. There are also small amounts of matte overpaint concealing old areas of damage and splatter in the green foreground and background. The painting exhibits heavy soiling, stray marks, and abrasions overall. Water damage has caused lighter vertical streaks, mainly visible through the sky. Contact with a previous matboard has cause matburn on surface of the painting. The matburn affects the other ~1” of the composition and is most visible along the top, left and right edges (see below).
