Description

wooden sign that is grey and weathered. Black painted letters that say "Skull Run Ferry" holes in board where it was mounted. note: Skull Run is said to have gotten its name through an Irish pioneer Zeri Kidlow. who had settled at the mouth of the river. He became friendly with the natives and started making "Poteen" from potatoes. This gave him security and social status among the Indians. his place became a great social gathering place. he became the first saloon keeper in jackson county. But displaced people from settlements in Va. crossed the blue ridge mountains for more hunting grounds in the west. Strange Indians began showing up, disrupting the peaceful community Kidlow and his followers confronted the Shawnee at the "Low Gap" that led into the valley of "Little Pond Creek" upon his return he found his wife wounded and his son decapitated. And swore to avenge the boys death. He would go on "manhunts" and return with many skulls and remnants of those Shawnee who he murdered. Hence the name Skull Run.
