1883- Ravenswood March 4th- Dear children (C&M?) 10 1/12 o'clock- grandma has just finished her breakfast. I have a few minutes before her. Your father is in Rocking Chair before fire he has eaten nothing he is under the weather he has himself filled up to the brim with a cold and aches, such as I had some 3 weeks ago. Josie's baby, Anna and I went up River last Thursday night on S_____. Mary_ Allie(?) & Charlie went Wednesday on s_____. Auntie Kouns (?) took supper here last night. Eva Hayworth came home on _____. I have not been out of gate since last Wednesday have had rheumatism in night hip and knees could not sit down or get up without holding on to something turn in bed used Saint Jacob rubbed well and bound flannel on my knee: went to bed and in five or ten minutes was glad to send flannels flying in every direction out of the bed. It seemed as though ten million of pins were holding high carnival in all sorts of jigs in my knee joint- thought if I could only snatch that old monk who has the oil by his fore top(?) I would give him a few shakes. We are all rejoicing that the wedding is not tonight we are rather a disabled set. The weather has been very disagreeable snow and blow here. Gibbs (Ann Richie's father) left town yesterday told your father he had bought the house owned by Dr. J. Wetzel and one next for himself and Emma. They move here in April. It must be the house Dr W. used to live in. Meeting s______ in our church and North M. E. think that old woodchuck saw his shadow to some purpose. A few lines from charlie. Have sent off about 50 packages of cake. Did you succeed in reaching aunt _____ and the rest with their basket in good order? Or did you get as crazy in the boat and lost it? Willie said he thought they were preparing for a lively time on the boat. If it had not have been for Grace (?) ______ would have liked to have gone up when you did. ______ and _________ are very glad all are gone; they feel at home now. Sandwiches, chicken salad and ambrosia still on hand. Tis cold. Must draw up to the fire and say good bye. Love to all. Write often. May God in mercy keep and direct all your steps is the constant prayer of your aff (short for affectionate) mother. (The upside down portion of the letter) A beautiful card from ____ Tiffany. Several letters of regret at not being able to come. Do not forget to go and see Aunt Cathrine and Libby. Pa sends love to you both & all the rest. Grandma the same.Date(s) of Creation
