Abram Deem, a respected member of a Lubeck District family, married with several children, was cruelly murdered on 09/14/1864. Deem was well liked and didn't have much to say regarding the North and South conflict. It is known that his sympathy was with the confederacy. Lt. Kenley of the Union Army assisted local authorities in the investigation of Deem's murder. Arrested were Daniel Grogan, Thomas Boyce, and Mortimer Gibbony. All found guilty. Boice and Grogan were hung on 12/09/1866. On the first try, the rope broke. They had to do a second hanging. Gibbony had escaped but he was recaptured on 03/10/1866. He was resentenced to hang on 06/15/1866. Crowds awaited for hours to watch the hanging, hotels were sold out. They were hung from the "Hanging Tree" on Ft. Foremanhill. Hundreds of people attended.
