In 1909, united fuel gas company started laying the gas lines for jackson county. In 1911, gas pipe was hauled to ripley by the ripley and mill creek valley railroad. Teams of oxen roamed the streets hauling the heavy rigs. The new line was laid in the ripley improvement company addition, now known as charleston drive
from jchs: "Ripley underwent a major infrastructure project in 1908. The location is along So. Church Street (Rt. 21) between Main Street (Rt. 33) and Charleston Drive."
