Written in top right corner where stamp would be “FREE”. Letter: July 10, 1942 - Hi Monroe Mae, Well I guess the world is pretty big isn’t it. One day one place then gone again from Texas to Oregon it’s only 3900 miles the way we traveled . Got on the trainFri evening 730 got here 1030 We’d seen plenty of country but now that I am here I could start back just any time. You know I like to ride, that’s it join the army see the world ride in a Pullman eat in dinner call the porter if you are not satisfied let him make the bed sweep the floor, cost that nothing now. We sleep in tents eat out of mess kits on the ground or a bench if we are lucky but no making to do use a rake for a broom that’s the easiest anyway, we have it pretty nice though at that and have a shower built out on the field you never have to send any shorts to the laundry for we have to take a shower in them for we don’t have any blinds or pull down as yet and they forgot to put on the hot water valve to, the water is pumped in out of one of these mountain streams so you see couldn’t get very cold and it’s just the thing for shaving, another thing we don’t half t fool with is changing sheets and pillow cases for we don’t have any of them either. Oh I guess a fellow can’t have a porter all the time, so why bitch about it. Well you should have been along and stopped off when we crossed the Rockies mountains. It looked like good fishing but I couldn’t do any of it. We left Texas to Okla. Kan. Neb. Col. Utah. New Cal then Ore. I always wanted to see the salt lake so I had the chance. I came right through the middle. I thought we were on our way across the pond but I never seen anything about a rail road across them it was 35 mi wide 75’ long. I also looked for the grasshoppers but didn’t see any so maybe I had better quit for a while. How’s my pet getting along with her hay. Suppose everyone is working hard we don’t have much time off here ourselves. I guess we are the housekeepers for the present the 96th housekeepers although I am not verY good at it well untill the next time I better get out of here before someone comes in to tell me to do something. Harry A Jones A.P.O. 96-421st Q.M.Bn Camp Adair Corvallis, Oregon Who said Texas was such a bad place to be
