Description

2022-2nd Youth - Rainbow car (different car) Horn Elementary is taking its inspiration from Unicorns for this year's art car. The idea comes from the fact that we can learn a lot of life lesson's from this magical creature. Some of the lessons we focused on as a school is "Believe in yourself even if no one else does," "It's okay to be different," and "There is magic inside of you." To create this magical unicorn, students from PK - 5th grade used the art of weaving to weave donated fabric through garden fencing that is draped over the car. Every student in the school learned how to weave and even tie knots. The horn and cardinal were done with paper mache. Our goal is to create a huge scale representation of the lessons that we can learn from unicorns. I am the art teacher at Horn Elementary. I've been participating in the Houston Art Car Parade since 2012 when I taught with YES Prep and have brought the Art Car excitement to each school I have worked at since then. Art Car season brings art out of the classroom and connects students with the art community. I have seen how Art Car creations build community, self esteem and creates lifetime memories for these students - and this is what inspires me to lead this large scale project each year. My students and I are most excited for the Main Street Art Car Drag that comes to our school and of course, Parade Day! The Art Car drag gives every student the opportunity to experience Art Car wonder and since every student in our school is part of our creation, it is amazing that each one of them get to see other school's and artists' creations up close - even if they can't make it on parade day. Art Car season is my favorite season!!
