A small red hatchback has been invaded by Beetlemania! The side panels sport a grassy habitat painted on magnetic vinyl panels infested with many colorful beetles actually found around the world (but on steroids!). They swarm the car that is topped with an impressive staghorn specimen in a stunning pose, built from papier-mache, mixed media, and found objects. The artist/driver has an equally notable bug-decor outfit to celebrate the day.
After years of painting, etc., I got really interested in mixed media, mosaics, sculpture, and crafts as way to greater expressiveness in my work. Smither Park has inspired me with beauty and whimsy, and the workshops there led me to work with new materials. Particularly, I am fascinated by nature, and love to represent interactions with all aspects of the animal/vegetable/mineral world. I have long wanted to present a vehicle, and this is the first chance I had to work on a car, though in 2019 I did create a bike entry. Can't wait to see what other creative folk are doing for the Art Car Parade, it never disappoints!
