Description

---- BUICK REFLECTRA is a 1996 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon, adorned with approximately 3500 acrylic reflex reflectors. It is DRIVEN DAILY by its creator and owner, David Haim. On the sides of the car, amber reflectors are arranged in a braided pattern. Towards the rear of the car, the pattern unfurls and the color transitions to red, in compliance with motor vehicle regulations for a “DAILY DRIVER.” On the tailgate, the red reflectors form a flame pattern. On the hood, a mosaic of reflectors forms the portrait of a woman. The amber and red reflectors are of the rectangular type normally found on bicycle pedals. The white reflectors on the hood are cut from conspicuity reflectors, which are typically used on tractor-trailer rigs. Each wheel contains a three dimensional array of reflectors, designed to strobe in three colors: amber, red and white. The “REFLECTRA” nameplate was created by modifying and combining two nameplates from a Buick Electra, the former flagship model of that marque. Reflectra’s appearance varies with ambient lighting conditions and the angle of view. It sparkles in the sun, but appears flat on overcast days. It glows when parked in the shade on sunny days, and is radiant under artificial light at night. Bands of reflected light shimmer along the braided patterns, when the viewing angle changes as the car moves. Reflectra’s concept evolved from divergent sources. Inspiration originated from: jewelry design, reflective jogging and biking apparel, Union Pacific™ railroad locomotives, with their reflective red trim, an interest in vehicle conspicuity for safety, and other artcars, especially Tim Klein’s magnificently executed Yarn Car.---- For years, I spectated at the Houston Art Car Parade. I always came back wanting to make an art car. Eventually, I had a concept that I would be proud to drive every day, so I pulled the trigger and made BUICK REFLECTRA! Participating in the art car community has been rewarding. Interesting, intelligent people!
