Much faded embroidery created by Sarah Fossett aged 8, dated 25 February 1788. She was possibly a sister of the Mary Ann Fossett who was the great-grandmother of Kathleen Hughes and Humphrey Vaughan Hughes. The writing on the back of the framed embroidery is probably Kathleen's but as it is in caps it is hard to be certain.
The verse on the embroidery seems a slightly odd one (to modern tastes) for an eight-year-old child:
Adam alone in Paradise did grieve
And thought Eden a desert without Eve
Until God pitying of his lonesome state
Crowned all his Wishes with a Loving mate
What reason then hath Man to slight or flout [her]
That Could not Live in Paradise without her.
