1789/Hughes: Augustus's bibleDescription
This huge and magnificent bible is Inscribed as having been bequeathed in 1789 to Augustus Hughes, his godson, by Guy Fairfax, the Rector of Newton Kyme, "after having been used in the Curates' Desk of the Parish Church for more than 140 years".
The church was St Andrews, Newton Kyme, North Yorkshire. Humphrey Vaughan Hughes's researches would take him to Newton Kyme in the 1970s**, where he obtained various pictures.
The bible seems to have been in use in the church since the reign of King Charles I (1625-1849). However, the Bible is dedicated to King James. ** Exact date of printing to be established.**
The book was rebound in Victorian times, and at that time the birth, marriage and death records of the Vaughan family were bound in with it.
Augustus was born in 1783, so would have been six years old at the time of the bequest. The bible contains handwritten details of his marriage to Mary Ann Fossett, who was his second wife, and the dates of their deaths. It also gives details of their children. Their only surviving child was Frances, who would marry John Lingard Vaughan. She was the grandmother of Humphrey Vaughan Hughes and Kathleen Hughes.
