1812/Hughes: Mary Ann Fossett

Name/Title

1812/Hughes: Mary Ann Fossett

Description

Circa 1812. Mary Ann Fossett - at about 25 years of age in this portrait, which is an old photograph of an original painting or engraving. In the accompanying details, Kathleen has spelt Ann as Anne, a very rare lapse on Kathleen's part; she calls her "Grandmamma Hughes" - this must have been her family name as she was actually the great-grandmother of Kathleen. Mary Ann Fossett married Augustus Hughes (the brother of William Hughes who was the great-grandfather of Kathleen Mack on her father's side) and is his 'relict' as mentioned in the probate of 1838. Note 12/12/2025 - Monica's detailed family tree, just obtained, gives the following details: Augustus: born 1783, died 17 October 1837, aged 53, at Stoke Damerel, Devon. Mary Ann: born 1787, married 1817 (aged 30), died 20 December 1844, aged 57, at Islington. Her first child was Frances Hughes, born 3 September 1818, who would become the mother of Rose Edith Vaughan and thus the grandmother of Kathleen Hughes. The following scenario seems likely: the family of Augustus and Mary Ann were located in Islington (13 Prospect Place, Liverpool Road); Augustus and Mary Ann moved to Devon, possibly for his health; after he died, Mary Ann moved back to Islington. This gives a London background for Frances Hughes, who would marry John Lingard Vaughan in 1843 at All Hallows, City of London, approximately 3 miles from Islington.
