Description

The first date on this page of the Day family bible is for Edmund Stainton Day (it is not known why 'Stainton' has been crossed out), born 1830. His first wife was Ellen Brett, whom he married in 1859, and they were the parents of Horatio Edmund Valentine Day, who would marry Dorothy Hughes in 1908. The bible was given to Edmund by his mother, Mary Anne Day, on 25 December 1849, ten years before his marriage, so it was not a wedding gift as such bibles often were. The gift is noted as being from his "affectionate mother" but the signature does not look like Mary Anne and perhaps reads "Mother Day". There is a poem at the back of the book called "A Mother's Gift - The Bible" which has been written in the same handwriting as the dedication at the front. It appears to have been composed by Mary Anne Day and begins: Remember, love, who gave thee this When other days shall come: When she who had thy earliest kiss Sleeps in her narrow home.
