Page 8 in the family bible gives this life-summary for Melvill, son of Seneca and Mary Elizabeth Hughes, and brother to Francis, the father of Kathleen. In later life he lived with his widowed older sister, Emeline. They were wildly eccentric and frequently very drunk indeed.
Humphrey, his great-nephew, refers in one letter to 'the loopy Melvill' (28 August 1974, to Kathleen), and describes how his grandfather Seneca experimented with Melvill's education.
