Augustus Fossett Vaughan was the uncle of Kathleen and Humphrey. He married Fanny Hughes, the sister of their father Francis, In October 1872.
There is no known surviving picture of Augustus. In the combined Hughes and Vaughan family portrait in 1879, he does not appear with his four sisters although his wife Fanny is present.
In the absence of a portrait, some of his characteristic handwriting must stand in. He had two types of writing, this very elegant and clear script, and a rough - sometimes very rough indeed - script for notes.
