1876/Vaughan: Augustus's auction notesDescription
This note, written by Augustus Fossett Vaughan, appears to have been the wording for a poster printed by J Harrop in Manchester on behalf of the firm of Vaughan & Sons. The auction is to take place at The Red Lion in "Tiviot Dale within Heaton Norris adjoining the town of Stockport". The office of Vaughan and Sons was at 10 Tiviot Dale, Heaton Norris.
An 1878 Post Office Cheshire Trades Directory (digitised by Chester East Council) gives the firm of Vaughan and Sons as consisting of Augustus Fossett Vaughan, George Lingard Vaughan (probably Augustus's brother), and John Lingard Vaughan. However, the last name may be an error and this was really John Lingard, which would tie up with the mention within the note of "Mr Lingard, attorney in Stockport". (No solicitor named Lingard is mentioned independently in the trade directory.)
This interesting piece of paper may only have survived because at the bottom of it there is a note about John Lingard, part of Augustus's family researches. Augustus is extrapolating back from a date of death and number of years lived to a birth date of 1752.
