Name/Title
1880/Vaughan: Christ Church, Heaton NorrisDescription
Christ Church, Wellington Road North, Heaton Norris. This church was intimately connected with the Vaughan family, Rose Edith Vaughan was married there, and her father was thought to have been buried in a family vault, although this was probably outside the church as the Burial Acts of the 1850s ended the practice of burials inside churches.
Humphrey notes that there were three stained glass windows at Christ Church given by John Lingard Vaughan: one to the memory of his father, John Vaughan; one to the three sons of John Vaughan who died in infancy; and one to the children of John Lingard Vaughan who died in infancy. (See Humphrey genealogical notes.)
Built in 1846, the church was gutted by fire in 1977. A large part of the ruin was demolished and what remains can be seen in this photo.
The church was designed by Manchester architect William Hayley in 1846. "It consisted of a nave, aisles, transepts, chancel and west tower and spire, constructed in coursed sandstone in a developed Early English style. All the fittings, glass, furnishings appear to have been stolen or destroyed in the fire, including the five clock bells by Warner (1896) which were stolen in 1977. [...] It was acquired by The Churches Conservation Trust in May 1979."
