1891/Vaughan: Letter from Frances Vaughan to Frankie Hughes

Name/Title

1891/Vaughan: Letter from Frances Vaughan to Frankie Hughes

Scope and Content

Frankie Hughes was Francis Hughes, but usually called Frankie or Jay to differentiate him from his father, also called Francis Hughes. Diddy in the letter is Dorothy, Frankie's oldest sister. The letter is written by Frances Vaughan the grandmother of the five Hughes siblings. By 1891 she was living in London, not far from the Hughes family, so she seems to be on holiday, attended by her maiden daughter, Annette (sometimes known as Auntie Fly). Becket House (unknown location) appears to be the home of Catherine Ann Vaughan, now married to John Ball (Aunty Katie and Uncle John). John Ball was a medical doctor, who married Catherine Anne in 1870. Kathleen in her memoirs marks Catherine as having died when Kathleen was very young, hence possibly in the 1890s.
