Frederick, the oldest child, is not in this photograph. He was born on 30 December 1877. As a young man, he entered employment with Andrew Chalmers and was so talented he rose to be its chairman and owner. RJ would take over from him in the late 1920s. Andrew Chalmers was the source of the Mack family wealth.
Of this family of 11, there had been six other children who had succumbed at a young age to the various lethal maladies of Victorian childhood. After RJ's birth in January 1886, all the following four children died. Marnie, who was born eleven years after RJ, was the last and only survivor of the five youngest children.
In 1921, Marnie married Jack Henderson. Their son Roger Henderson would become one of the family historians.
