1905/Hughes: Hymn bookDescription
DIGITAL IMAGE, original item with Johnston family.
This hymn book is marked as being the property of Margery Hughes, 5 Hillbury Road, which was the family house in Balham. In January 1905, Margery was living at Cranleigh, Sevenoaks, where her mother Rose died the following month.
The various scribbled claims to ownership by her friend Jehane and then her siblings and her nephew Teddy (E F Day) make up an amusing long-running joke, ending in 1935 when Margery was briefly over from Bloemfontein, South Africa, on business concerning the Community of St Michael and All Angels at which she was a nun. She seems to have left the hymn book behind when she went back to South Africa, which would be why it was in Kathleen's archives.
