1905/Mack: RJ in Canada

Name/Title

1905/Mack: RJ in Canada

Scope and Content

in his late teens, RJ Mack went to live in Canada for some years. He probably travelled on a ship of the Montreal Ocean Steamship Company, often known as the Allan Line after its founder. A likely ship would have been the RMS Bavarian (this was wrecked after RJ's transatlantic passage, in early November 1905, off Montreal). The image is of a label inside the large strong trunk which RJ used to transport his belongings. It gives his family home address as The Poplars, Upholland, and then the address he is going to - G Q Melville Esq, 1752 Notre Dame Street, Montreal, Quebec, near the St Lawrence river waterfront. The label is in his handwriting. There is no date on the label but there is a confirmed date of RJ being in Canada in 1905, when he would have been 19 years old; he was then at Tillsonburg, Ontario.
