Bloemfontein was the capital of the Orange River Colony, formerly the Boers' Orange Free State, but captured by the British in 1900 during the Boer War. This view was taken around four to five years before Margery Hughes began her novitiate at the Community of St Michael and All Angels. The novitiate began in 1913, but it is not known if Margery was in Bloemfontein earlier than this.
