Name/Title
1918/Mack: RAMC CorporalDescription
Unidentified Corporal, part of 1st Division Field Ambulance, RAMC, British Army, First World War.
During the First World War, RJ Mack served as a Royal Army Medical Corps stretcher bearer on the Western Front. He was in 32nd Division, but would have been wearing an identical uniform to this man except with 32nd Division shoulder badges and without the two arrow-shaped stripes which denoted the rank of Corporal.
RJ refused all opportunities for promotion and remained a Private throughout his time in the Army. There are no surviving photographs of him in uniform, and his son Peter specifically stated that there were none on display in their home (as would later be the custom of the Mack family for relatives or colleagues serving with the Forces in the Second World War).
