Name/Title
1922/Hughes: Humphrey Vaughan HughesDescription
No date on the back** but probably when Humphrey joined the Benedictine community at Pershore in 1922. Born in April 1889, he would then have been 33 years old.
He took his life vows one year later, in 1923, the novitiate being only one year at that time.
On becoming a Benedictine monk, Humphrey took the name of Anselm Hughes, it being customary to take the name of an inspirational past figure of the Church. Anselm was a Benedictine monk, abbot, philosopher, and theologian, who served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093 to 1109.
Once he had taken his solemn vows, Humphrey's new name was often prefixed by "Dom", a title which was a mark of respect for a solemnly professed Benedictine monk. The letters "OSB" which often appear after his name stand for Ordo Sancti Benedicti, the Order of Saint Benedict.
To his family he remained Humphrey, or "Paxi".
