1925/Chalmers: Zomba Plateau, Shire Highlands

Description

"A View from Zomba Plateau, Nyasaland", from a painting by Mrs CC Metcalfe. This romantic painting shows an African boy standing on a peak of the Zomba Plateau, a spectacular wooded mountain of the Shire Highlands, Nyasaland. Unused postcard from the Nyasaland Court, East African Pavilion, British Empire Exhibition. The Exhibition took place at Wembley from 1924-25. It was not until 1929 that Andrew Chalmers acquired its first overseas holding, with the foundation of the Ntondwe Tobacco Company. Ntondwe was in the Shire Highlands, as was the Cholo tea estate which Andrew Chalmers would start to develop after the Second World War.
