1930/Hughes: "Book of St Albans"Description
DIGITAL IMAGE, original with Johnston family. Also PDF of translation and translation notes.
Circa 1930. This family spoof in Latin, decorated with musical notations, must have been written by Humphrey, possibly with the assistance of Teddy, Dorothy's son. It is not known who created the illuminated manuscript, the decorations of which were not completed.
It would have been written about the same time as "The Book of Sunnybank", when Dorothy was living in Waverley Road, St Albans.
The mother of the house is Dorothy, She is clearly addressing Humphrey, her brother, who was renowned for his attachment to his pipe, and probably also Teddy, who seems to have had a similar love of smoking, but of cigarettes, judging by the family photographs.
