1942/Hughes: Humphrey in the USADescription
In 1939, Humphrey (Dom Anselm) undertook his third tour of America on behalf of the Benedictines of Nashdom Abbey. The outbreak of war meant that he had to remain in the United States until the end of 1943.
This appears to be a copy of an original photograph with a sticker attached to it, the sticker reading
"Hope you enjoyed our game as much as I did! Your friend Henry Oakshot [?], Fredonia, N.Y, 1942-43".
Humphrey's obituary, written by someone at Nashdom who knew him very well, stated that during the war, unable to return to England after a USA lecture tour, "for two years he returned to parochial life, being Rector of Fredonia, N.Y., in the diocese of Buffalo." This photograph clearly stems from that period.
