1943/Mack: RAF accident report for Peter's aircraft
Description
DIGITAL ONLY: original on Leslie Alexander Grant's service record with the National Archives of Canada.
Accident report for the crash of Lancaster JB176, Thackway crew, on 17 December 1943.
The accident was due to low visibility due to fog and cloud, lack of landing aids to guide multiple aircraft (returning from a Berlin operation) down on Bourn's runway, and petrol shortage. The official summary at the end mentions only the first factor. The SBA system which it mentions had been knocked out earlier by the crash of Squadron Leader Mackenzie's aircraft.
Out of seven crew members, five were killed by the crash.
