Peter at home in the summer of 1944. His physical recovery from the serious air crash of 17 December 1943 was close to complete, although he would always have a degree of disability in his left knee. The mental wounds perhaps never healed.
He is wearing the eagle of the Path Finder Force on his breast pocket. The award of the badge was very prestigious and usually only given on a permanent basis after a 45-operation tour, or death or capture while on bombing operations.
Peter's PFF badge was a special and very rare award, he only having completed one Pathfinder operation. The award is highly likely to have been authorised directly by the Pathfinder leader, Donald Bennett, who attended the crash site on 17 December 1943.
