Operating list for RAF Hospital Ely on 24 January 1944 for the Surgeon-in-Charge at Ely, Wing Commander Jimmy Armstrong.
9th on the list is F/Sgt Mack, "GSW elbow - replaster (bed)". This is Peter Mack, just over a month from the aircraft crash of 17 December.
The Theatre Sister was Valerie Blackwell (later Valerie Cornford), who worked with Armstrong in the theatre in 1943-1944. In 1944 Armstrong wrote a book called "Bone Grafting in the Treatment of Fractures". This was published in 1945, and Valerie Blackwell bought a copy of the book to remind her of her days with him. She still had one of the theatre lists, and she placed it in the book, because it was Armstrong’s list and Armstrong’s book. The list remained in the book for 53 years, until she heard that Jennie Gray was looking for information about Ely Hospital, and very kindly gave it to her.
