1945/Chalmers: Bill Barnard on wartime service

Name/Title

1945/Chalmers: Bill Barnard on wartime service

Description

Bill Barnard was a long-term Andrew Chalmers employee and company director. This photograph is from a scrapbook, but it also appears in RJ Mack's book on the company, published in 1950. RJ was proud of his employees who had served in the Forces in the war; several pictures of them in uniform hung on his office wall. Bill Barnard served in the RAF as ground crew, possibly in an office admin/managerial role as that was his forte. The three stripes on his sleeve denote the rank of Sergeant, a medium-grade non-commissioned rank. The date of this photograph is not known, but is likely to have been towards the end of the war. William Ernest Barnard, "Bill Barnard", was so trusted by RJ Mack that in the 1950s he made him co-executor of his Will.
