Name/Title
1948/Chalmers: At Zambeze river crossingDescription
This somewhat rudimentary Zambeze river ferry, consisting of a pontoon towed by ropes or cables, was still in place in 1962. Empty oil cans were affixed beneath as buoyancy and stabilising aids.
This ferry must be the one described in Peter Mack's The Golden Weed: "The road between Salisbury and Limbe is intersected by the Zambesi at Tete in Portuguese East Africa, and has always occasioned serious delays to road traffic, owing to the inadequacy of the ferry, which can only accommodate a few vehicles at a time, and can take much more than an hour to make the double crossing."
Limbe was where the Ntondwe Tobacco Company, owned by Andrew Chalmers' management, was based. Salisbury in Rhodesia was where the Mashonaland Tobacco Company was based.
The spelling of Zambeze/Zambesi/Zambezi is variable according to source.
