1955/Chalmers: Capetown Castle certificate

Name/Title

1955/Chalmers: "Capetown Castle" certificate

Description

Union-Castle ships were frequently used by Andrew Chalmers personnel travelling to and from Africa, but this type of certificate was for the younger passengers. Dated 15 April 1955, it is a Crossing the Equator certificate for Caroline Louise Hoendervoogt. She was the daughter of a Dutch airman, Jan Hendrik Hoendervoogt, who during the Second World War served with the Royal Netherlands Navy and then later with 320 (Netherlands) Squadron, RAF Coastal Command, based in Scotland and England (Bircham Newton). In a very droll touch, the certificate is signed by Neptune as well as the captain of the ship, whose name is unreadable. The following year, Marion Mack's sister Trixie Edmuns and her husband John and daughter Delia emigrated to Rhodesia, and it is likely that Delia was given one of these certificates on their outward-bound voyage from Southampton.
